Information

This is a rare set of eight dining chairs designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Ole Wanscher and produced in 1942 by the renowned cabinetmaker A.J. Iversen in Denmark. The chairs exemplify mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship rooted in classicism and cabinetmaking tradition. Wanscher’s designs often reflect his interest in historical furniture types, interpreted with refined proportions and structural clarity. The chairs are constructed from solid rosewood, which was a prized material in Danish furniture making of the period due to its strength and deep, expressive grain. The backrests are designed with an intersecting double-X lattice structure, offering both structural support and a decorative rhythm. The seat frames are visually light but robustly constructed with bracing stretchers and mortise-and-tenon joinery. The seats are upholstered in natural tan leather, which has aged evenly and shows light signs of wear consistent with use, adding to the authenticity of the ensemble. The seat padding remains supportive, and the leather retains a soft sheen and warm tone. The legs are slightly tapered at the front and subtly splayed at the back, contributing to the overall visual balance and ergonomic stance of each chair.

Ole Wanscher was part of the generation of Danish designers who bridged traditional cabinetmaking with modern functionalism. A.J. Iversen, one of the finest Danish cabinetmakers of the 20th century, collaborated closely with Wanscher and others such as Kaare Klint, producing works characterized by precise execution and exceptional material quality.

The dimensions of each chair are 50 cm in width (19.7 inches), 53 cm in depth (20.9 inches), and 86 cm in height (33.9 inches), with a seat height of 44 cm (17.3 inches). The set remains in very good vintage condition with minor surface wear to the leather and wood, consistent with careful use and age.
