Axel Einar Hjorth stool
This rare stool, model Utö, was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden during the 1930s. The piece is crafted in solid pine and finished with an acid-stained surface, giving it a deep, warm tone that accentuates the natural grain structure of the wood. The circular seat rests on three cylindrical legs, joined using visible dowel joints that reveal the precision and honesty of its construction.
The design exemplifies Hjorth’s philosophy of combining robust craftsmanship with a primitive, almost architectural simplicity. Each component is executed with functional clarity and minimal ornamentation, reflecting the rustic yet refined character of his “sportstugemöbler” (sports cabin furniture) series produced for Nordiska Kompaniet in the early 1930s. The round top, slightly beveled at the edges, and the sturdy proportions of the legs contribute to a tactile, sculptural quality that feels timeless and substantial.
Axel Einar Hjorth, one of Sweden’s leading designers of the interwar period, is known for creating furniture that bridged the gap between neoclassical elegance and functional modernism. His cabin furniture collections, including models such as Utö, Lovö, and Sandhamn, were designed for leisure homes and summer houses, reflecting a distinctly Swedish attitude toward simplicity, craftsmanship, and nature.
This example remains in excellent vintage condition, showing subtle signs of wear and age, including small surface marks and dry cracks consistent with the natural behavior of solid pine. These characteristics enhance the authenticity and patina of the piece without compromising its structure.
