Axel Einar Hjorth attrib. Lovö table
This round table, model Lovö, is attributed to Axel Einar Hjorth and was produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in 1939. The table is executed in acid-stained pine, a material and finish characteristic of Hjorth’s furniture for the Sportstugemöbler series. The tabletop is composed of solid pine boards with visible annual rings and natural knots, giving the surface an organic and textured appearance. The acid staining brings out the grain and creates warm tonal variations across the wood.
The structural design is straightforward yet distinctive. A tapered central pillar supports the round top and is joined at the base by four shaped feet arranged in a cross formation. The feet have softly curved profiles that add a sculptural element to the otherwise simple geometry. This construction emphasizes stability while maintaining an artisanal, handmade quality. The underside of the tabletop is marked with the model number 42136, corresponding to Nordiska Kompaniet’s production system.
Axel Einar Hjorth designed the Sportstugemöbler collection in the 1930s for Swedish weekend cottages and holiday homes. These pieces combined traditional rural influences with modernist clarity, often using rustic pine in bold, architectural forms. The Lovö model exemplifies this synthesis, with its minimal structure, robust materials, and decorative shaping at the base. The table reflects Hjorth’s ability to merge functional furniture with expressive craftsmanship.
The table is in good vintage condition with signs of use and patina, including small marks and natural wear consistent with age and material.
