Information

This rare bar cabinet was designed by Kurt Østervig and produced by K.P. Møbler in Denmark during the 1960s. It is crafted in rosewood with brass details and glass elements, representing the refined Scandinavian approach to functional storage furniture in the mid-century period. The design combines practical features with a sculptural presence, demonstrating Østervig’s ability to balance elegance with utility.

The cabinet is constructed with tambour doors that slide open to reveal a fitted bar interior. Inside, the unit includes shelves in glass and compartments designed for storage of bottles and glassware. Two white molded drawers are positioned at the top, with concave fronts that contrast visually against the darker rosewood exterior. The doors are fitted with brass handles and a lock mechanism, reflecting the Danish tradition of combining wood with high-quality metal details. The rosewood surfaces exhibit a vivid grain pattern, ranging from deep brown to lighter golden tones, giving the piece a dynamic expression.

Kurt Østervig (1912–1986) was a Danish furniture designer known for his versatility and collaborations with several of Denmark’s finest cabinetmakers. Originally trained as a shipbuilder, Østervig’s work often carries a structural clarity and precise detailing. His designs from the 1950s and 1960s exemplify mid-century Danish modernism, with an emphasis on both functional interiors and strong, architectural lines. K.P. Møbler was a respected Danish producer, recognized for finely crafted pieces in rosewood and teak during the postwar period.

This bar cabinet reflects the mid-century Scandinavian focus on multi-functional furniture, where compact forms concealed complex storage solutions. Its slim legs and well-proportioned body create a sense of lightness despite the solid construction, and the tambour doors contribute to its clean and practical appearance.

The piece remains in excellent vintage condition, showing only minor signs of use. There is a small damage to the interior mirror, while the exterior surfaces and structural integrity remain strong and well-preserved.

Width 120 cm (47.2 in), depth 45.5 cm (17.9 in), height 115.5 cm (45.5 in).
