Information

This very rare bar cabinet was designed by Kurt Østervig and produced by K.P. Møbler in Denmark during the 1950s. It exemplifies the Scandinavian mid-century approach to furniture, where elegance and functionality merge seamlessly. The cabinet is constructed in rosewood, a material highly valued during the period for its durability and expressive grain. The rich, dark surface is complemented by its clean-lined silhouette and careful joinery, which underline Østervig’s ability to balance refinement with utility.

The cabinet stands on a raised frame with stretcher supports, which gives the piece a light and architectural presence despite its compact proportions. The exterior is marked by veneered rosewood with striking grain patterns and sculpted wooden handles that add a subtle decorative element while maintaining restraint in form. Inside, the cabinet reveals a more playful and luxurious character. The interior is finished with contrasting lighter woods, mirrored panels, and glass shelving, creating depth and brightness. A central pull-out tray, inlaid with a reversible surface including a chessboard, reflects the dual function of the piece as both a storage cabinet and a space for entertainment.

Kurt Østervig was one of Denmark’s most prolific furniture designers, known for his practical yet highly refined works that spanned from residential furniture to ship interiors. His collaborations with smaller Danish cabinetmakers such as K.P. Møbler often resulted in unique, high-quality pieces produced in smaller numbers compared to the output of larger workshops. This bar cabinet, with its integrated details and multifunctional design, represents Østervig’s sensitivity to the needs of modern living during the mid-20th century.

The cabinet is preserved in good vintage condition, showing only minor signs of usage consistent with age, which adds to its authentic patina. It stands as a fine example of Scandinavian craftsmanship from the 1950s, combining practicality with understated luxury.
