Kurt Østervig bar cabinet
This is a very rare bar cabinet designed by Kurt Østervig and produced by K.P. Møbler in Denmark during the 1950s. The cabinet is crafted from richly figured rosewood, presenting a warm tone and striking grain pattern across its surfaces. It stands elevated on a rectangular rosewood base with stretcher supports, giving the piece an elegant, architectural presence.
The cabinet doors open to reveal a light birch interior fitted with a combination of open shelves, a drawer with integrated storage compartments, and a removable serving tray with an inlaid checkerboard pattern, which doubles as a chessboard. This dual-purpose design reflects the Danish approach to functional yet refined furniture of the mid-century period. The piece is fitted with brass hardware, adding a subtle decorative accent to its clean-lined form.
Condition is excellent vintage, with only minor signs of wear that attest to careful use over the decades. The rosewood has developed a rich patina, enhancing its depth and character, while the interior remains clean and well-preserved.
Kurt Østervig (1912–1986) was a Danish furniture designer renowned for combining practicality with sophisticated detailing. His work often shows a balance between strict geometric lines and organic warmth, making it highly collectible today. This bar cabinet is a fine example of his craftsmanship, serving as both a functional storage piece and a focal point for entertainment.
Dimensions are 70 cm wide, 40 cm deep, and 120 cm high (approximately 27.6 x 15.7 x 47.2 inches).
