Pierre Forssell lantern
This rare brass hanging lantern was designed by Pierre Forssell and produced by Skultuna in Sweden during the 1950s. Constructed entirely of solid brass, the lantern features a textured, sculptural surface with a distinctive organic perforation pattern. The hand-cast appearance and irregular perforations lend it an artisanal, tactile quality while maintaining a geometric vertical form—an elongated rectangular prism with a gently tapered top, which culminates in a circular suspension ring. A detachable interior candleholder structure is included, allowing it to function as a practical hanging light source.
The surface of the lantern is deeply patinated, showing areas of oxidation and discoloration that are consistent with age and use. These natural marks are characteristic of untreated or minimally polished brass, contributing to the authenticity and historical integrity of the piece. The lantern is marked “Skultuna 1607” along with Forssell’s signature stamp, attesting to its provenance and production.
Pierre Forssell, a renowned Swedish industrial designer, was known for his expertise in working with metals, particularly during his tenure at Skultuna Messingsbruk, one of Sweden’s oldest brass foundries, founded in 1607. Forssell, trained as a silversmith, applied his refined sensibility to industrial design throughout the mid-20th century, creating utilitarian objects with sculptural qualities. His work often explored minimal forms enriched by surface treatment, perforation, and tactility, in alignment with Scandinavian design values of functionality, honesty in materials, and formal clarity.
Skultuna, the producer of this lantern, has a long-standing history of craftsmanship, spanning over four centuries. The company became known for collaborating with leading Swedish designers during the mid-20th century, transitioning from traditional production to modern design through partnerships with designers like Forssell.
The dimensions of the lantern are 7 cm in width, 7 cm in depth, and 35 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 2.8 inches wide, 2.8 inches deep, and 13.8 inches high.
