Arne Norell sofa

This two-seat sofa, model Indra, was designed by Arne Norell and produced by Arne Norell AB in Aneby, Sweden, during the 1960s. It showcases the hallmark features of Scandinavian mid-century design, emphasizing structural clarity, visible craftsmanship, and a refined use of materials.

The frame is crafted from dark-stained solid beech wood with exposed pegs and dowels, giving the sofa a robust yet articulated architectural presence. The construction highlights an open framework, with horizontal stretchers supporting the seating base and visible leather straps beneath the cushions, adding both functionality and aesthetic interest. The armrests are padded and fastened using adjustable leather belts in matching tones, secured with brass buckles and rivets, reinforcing the sofa’s handcrafted feel.

The cushions are upholstered in the original full-grain leather, a warm brown with reddish undertones, showing a rich patina developed over decades. The leather displays natural creasing, surface wear, and color variation, particularly noticeable on the armrests and seating surfaces. Tufted with fabric-covered buttons, the cushions retain their original padding, offering a balance of softness and support.
