Information

This is a rare set of twelve dining chairs designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Henning Kjærnulf. Produced in the 1950s by Sorø Stolefabrik in Denmark, these chairs exhibit a distinctive combination of oak and teak, showcasing the refined material contrasts typical of Scandinavian mid-century craftsmanship. The frames are crafted from solid oak with a warm, honey-brown tone, while the sculptural backrests are formed from richly grained teak, adding a deeper, reddish-brown hue. The seats are upholstered in the original savak wool fabric, featuring a muted olive-brown ground with off-white horizontal stripes, adding a textured, natural character to the chairs.

The overall form is characterized by clean lines and softly rounded edges, typical of mid-century Scandinavian design. The teak backrests are shaped with an organic curve and tapering edges, providing ergonomic support while introducing a sculptural visual element. The legs are cylindrical and slightly tapering, with gently curved stretchers connecting the frame for added stability and aesthetic coherence. The combination of contrasting woods and textile reflects the Scandinavian approach to balanced materiality and understated elegance.

These chairs are in good vintage condition, showing minor signs of wear consistent with age and use. The original wool upholstery remains intact, exhibiting subtle wear and patina that enhance its authenticity. The oak frames display a gentle aging of the wood, with light surface marks and tonal variation that contribute to the chairs’ vintage character. The teak backrests retain a rich, lustrous grain, underscoring the high quality of the materials used.
