Information

The Ilona two-seat sofa, designed by Arne Norell in the 1960s and produced by Arne Norell AB in Aneby, Sweden, is a prime example of Scandinavian mid-century design, combining fine craftsmanship, natural materials, and functional construction. Norell, known for his use of saddle-making techniques and visible structural elements, created the Ilona with an exposed beech frame in a dark stain, cylindrical members, and brass fittings.

The sofa features deep, padded dark red leather cushions secured by tan saddle leather straps with brass buckles, forming both the back and side panels. This harness-like system is structural and decorative, allowing comfort while showcasing traditional leatherworking skills. The leather has developed a rich patina, and the frame shows light wear, while the brass details have aged warmly, all contributing to the piece’s authentic vintage character.

Praised for its balance of structural clarity and relaxed comfort, the Ilona remains one of Norell’s most distinctive designs, valued for its modular construction and refined materiality. Good vintage condition with signs of use and a well-developed patina.

Dimensions: 153 cm (60.2 in) width, 82 cm (32.3 in) depth, 73 cm (28.7 in) height, seat height 37 cm (14.6 in).
