Bruno Mathsson easy chairs
The Karin easy chair, model 73, was designed by Bruno Mathsson in the 1960s and produced by DUX in Sweden. This model quickly became one of Mathsson’s most iconic designs, exemplifying his ability to merge functionality with a refined sense of form. The construction combines a chromed steel frame with fitted cushions in dark brown leather, presenting a balance between industrial clarity and tactile comfort. The chairs are mounted on four casters, allowing easy mobility, which was an innovative and practical feature for domestic interiors of the time.
The design is characterized by its low, cubic proportions and modular appearance. The seat and back cushions are generously padded and upholstered in button-tufted leather, creating a distinctive quilted surface that enhances both comfort and aesthetic rhythm. The armrests are also leather-covered, extending the padded comfort while following the strict geometric lines of the steel frame. The use of chromed steel tubing highlights the mid-century Scandinavian interest in lightweight, modern materials, while the leather provides a natural counterbalance in texture and warmth.
These examples are presented in excellent vintage condition with only minor signs of use, consistent with careful preservation. The leather shows a subtle sheen and natural surface variations, while the steel retains its polished luster. The chairs retain their original mobility function, with smooth-running casters intact.
Mathsson’s collaboration with DUX resulted in several of his most enduring designs, and the Karin easy chair remains a landmark in Scandinavian modern seating. Its fusion of technical innovation and timeless elegance situates it firmly within the canon of mid-century Scandinavian design.
