Josef Frank mirror
This rare brass mirror was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s. It is an excellent example of Frank’s distinctive approach to functional objects — blending modernist clarity with a playful sense of ornamentation that feels timeless yet deeply rooted in mid-century Scandinavian aesthetics.
The mirror features a rectangular form with softly rounded corners, framed by a sculptural brass edge composed of continuous looping elements. This decorative detailing, characteristic of Frank’s more expressive work, transforms a utilitarian object into a subtle yet striking focal point. The brass has developed a warm, natural patina over time, highlighting its age and authenticity while contributing to its visual richness.
Josef Frank, one of the most influential figures in 20th-century Scandinavian design, was renowned for his philosophy of combining beauty and practicality in everyday objects. After joining Svenskt Tenn in the 1930s, he created a wide range of furniture and decorative objects that challenged the strict functionalism of his time, instead embracing organic forms, ornamental details, and a humanistic approach to modernism. His mirrors, in particular, reflect his interest in craftsmanship and his ability to merge classic materials with contemporary sensibilities.
Produced by Svenskt Tenn — a cornerstone of Swedish design founded by Estrid Ericson in 1924 — this mirror represents the studio’s commitment to exceptional quality and enduring design. It remains in excellent vintage condition with minor signs of wear consistent with age and use.
