Pierre Forssell candlesticks

This rare pair of brass candlesticks, model Variabel, was designed by Pierre Forssell and produced by Skultuna in Sweden during the 1950s. They represent a refined example of Scandinavian mid-century design, combining functional minimalism with sculptural elegance.

The candlesticks feature a distinctive architectural form composed of cylindrical brass bodies with clean, vertical lines and precisely balanced proportions. Each piece is equipped with a pivoting arm terminating in a spherical counterweight, allowing the angle of the candleholder to be adjusted — a clever and functional detail that gives the model its name, Variabel. This element reflects Forssell’s talent for merging mechanical ingenuity with aesthetic restraint, creating objects that are both practical and visually striking.

Crafted from solid brass, the candlesticks display a rich, warm patina that has developed over decades, highlighting the material’s natural character and the quality of Skultuna’s craftsmanship. Founded in 1607, Skultuna is one of the world’s oldest brass foundries and has long been known for producing finely crafted objects that bridge traditional artisanal methods with modern design ideals.

Pierre Forssell (1925–2004) was a prominent figure in Swedish design, particularly celebrated for his work in metal. After studying at Konstfack in Stockholm, he joined Skultuna in the 1950s, where he created a series of iconic brass and stainless-steel objects known for their clarity, precision, and subtle technical innovation. His designs continue to be highly sought after for their timeless quality and understated sophistication.

The pair is in excellent vintage condition with minor signs of age and use.
