Börje Johanson bar stools
This set of three bar stools, model Classic, was designed by Börje Johanson and produced by Johanson Design in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1960s. The design reflects the Scandinavian modernist approach to furniture making, where functionality, refined proportions, and timeless materials are combined into a cohesive and elegant whole.
Each stool features a slender, trumpet-shaped base in polished brass, a material chosen for both its durability and its warm, luxurious character. The circular footrest, positioned midway along the stem, provides ergonomic comfort while maintaining the visual lightness of the structure. The seat is upholstered in black leather, creating a striking contrast with the golden brass frame. The gently rounded cushion enhances comfort and introduces a soft, tactile element that balances the sculptural quality of the metal base.
Börje Johanson was a key figure in mid-20th-century Scandinavian furniture design, known for his ability to merge modernist principles with a sense of refined sophistication. Johanson Design, founded in 1953, quickly became one of Sweden’s leading manufacturers of contemporary seating, producing furniture that was both functional and expressive, often seen in interiors ranging from private homes to public spaces and hotels.
The stools remain in good vintage condition with signs of age, use, and a natural patina that testifies to their history. The combination of materials and the elegant, minimal silhouette make them a quintessential example of Scandinavian modernism, balancing practicality with understated luxury.
