Information

This is the iconic Egg chair, model 3316, designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark. The chair is upholstered in its original black leather, which has developed a rich and characteristic patina over time, highlighting its authenticity and age. The leather displays natural wear and creasing consistent with use, giving the piece depth and character while preserving its elegant form.

The sculptural shell of the Egg chair, formed in moulded foam over a strong frame, is supported by a four-star aluminium swivel base. Its enveloping organic shape was groundbreaking at the time of its design, offering a private and cocoon-like seating experience. The model was originally created for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, a landmark project in which Arne Jacobsen was responsible for the complete architectural and interior design, making this chair a central piece of Danish modernism.

This chair exemplifies Jacobsen’s vision of combining functionalism with soft, organic forms. It reflects the Scandinavian mid-century approach to design, where craftsmanship, comfort, and innovative techniques were given equal priority. As an early production example, its proportions and details remain true to Jacobsen’s original intent.

The chair remains in good vintage condition, with visible signs of use and a well-preserved structure. The aluminium base shows slight wear consistent with age.

Dimensions: width 87 cm (34.2 inches), depth 85 cm (33.4 inches), height 106 cm (41.7 inches), seat height 38 cm (14.9 inches).
