Information

This is a rare first edition pair of Egg chairs, model 3316, designed by Arne Jacobsen and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark in 1959. The Egg chair was originally conceived for the lobby and reception areas of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, one of Jacobsen’s most iconic projects where he designed both the architecture and the interior furnishings. These chairs are considered an important milestone in modern design history, reflecting Jacobsen’s sculptural approach to furniture and his mastery of organic forms within industrial production.

The chairs are constructed with an aluminium swivel base supporting a molded shell upholstered in original black leather. The surface shows a rich patina, with natural wear consistent with age and use, which adds depth and character to the dark leather. The form itself is characterized by its enveloping curves, offering both privacy and comfort, and the high back and winged sides highlight its architectural presence. The integrated seat cushion and white rubber stamp markings confirm their early production, identifying them as first edition pieces directly connected to the original SAS Royal Hotel commission.

Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) was a Danish architect and designer whose work defined Scandinavian modernism in the mid-20th century. His designs often balanced functionalism with a distinctly sculptural quality, and the Egg chair remains one of his most celebrated works. Produced by Fritz Hansen, a Danish manufacturer with a long tradition of collaborating with leading designers, the chair combines advanced techniques in molded forms with traditional craftsmanship in upholstery. The Egg has since become a symbol of Danish design and remains highly sought after among collectors and institutions.

The pair is in good vintage condition with signs of usage and an attractive patina, illustrating their authenticity and age. Their presence as a matched set of first edition examples makes them particularly rare and historically significant.

Dimensions: 88.5 cm high, 78 cm wide, 106 cm deep, with a seat height of 37 cm (34.8 x 30.7 x 41.7 inches, seat height 14.6 inches).
