Information

This rare pair of easy chairs is attributed to Danish designer Illum Wikkelsø and produced in Denmark during the 1960s. The chairs exemplify mid-century Scandinavian design through a harmonious blend of organic forms and functional construction. Their silhouette is characterized by angular lines combined with a low, reclined profile, offering both a strong visual presence and ergonomic support.

The upholstery is in black leather, exhibiting natural creasing and patina that reflect age and use, adding authenticity and character to the pieces. The seat and back cushions are integrated into the frame with visible stitching and gentle contours, while the broad, gently curved armrests contribute to the chairs’ sculptural quality.

The base is crafted from solid rosewood, a prized hardwood known for its durability and rich, warm grain during the mid-century period. The angled legs feature exposed joinery with contrasting inlays, underscoring the craftsmanship and material integrity typical of Danish cabinetmaking of the era.

Illum Wikkelsø was recognized for designs that balanced modernist simplicity with natural comfort. Although this model is attributed to him rather than definitively documented, the form and material choices align closely with his approach to lounge seating in the 1950s and 1960s. Given that Danish furniture production at the time often involved smaller workshops and less-documented manufacturers, exact attribution can sometimes be challenging.

The chairs measure 84 centimeters (33.1 inches) in width, 90 centimeters (35.4 inches) in depth, and 87.5 centimeters (34.4 inches) in height, with a seat height of 40 centimeters (15.7 inches). They are in good vintage condition, showing wear consistent with use on the leather and minor age-related marks on the wood, but retain solid structural integrity.
