Bernt Petersen easy chairs

This rare pair of easy chairs was designed by Bernt Petersen and produced by Wørts Møbelsnedkeri in Denmark in 1964. The frames are made of solid oak with a warm, medium-brown tone that highlights the natural grain structure of the wood. The design features clean, geometric lines with precise joinery, emphasizing Petersen’s focus on craftsmanship and simplicity. The sides and back are fitted with handwoven cane panels that create a light and transparent visual character, contrasting elegantly with the solid frame.

The chairs retain their original loose cushions upholstered in black leather. The leather shows a soft surface patina with subtle creasing, consistent with careful use and adding depth to the vintage character. The oak frames and cane panels are in excellent vintage condition with small, age-appropriate signs of use. The cane remains taut and intact, displaying the durability of the material and the precision of the weaving.

Bernt Petersen (1937–2017) was a Danish furniture designer and cabinetmaker trained under Hans J. Wegner, and his work reflects the Danish modernist tradition of functionalism and minimalism. Petersen was known for his mastery of proportion and for producing pieces that balanced lightness with structural integrity. Wørts Møbelsnedkeri was a highly regarded Danish cabinetmaking workshop active during the mid-20th century, producing furniture of exceptional quality for many leading designers of the period.

These chairs are representative of mid-century Scandinavian design, with their restrained form, honest use of materials, and emphasis on handcraft. They exemplify a design philosophy where comfort, clarity, and functionality are seamlessly combined.
