Bernt Petersen
Bernt Petersen (1937–2017) was a Danish furniture designer associated with the development of modern Danish furniture during the postwar period. Trained as a cabinetmaker, he became known for his disciplined approach to construction and his focus on light, functional forms suited to both private and public interiors. His work reflects the clarity and practicality characteristic of late Danish modern design.
Biography
Bernt Petersen trained as a cabinetmaker in Denmark in 1957 and later studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen (now the Royal Danish Academy). Early in his career, he worked for manufacturers including Molibia and in the studio of Hans J. Wegner, experiences that shaped his understanding of proportion, material, and industrial production. In 1963 he established his own design studio, where he developed furniture distinguished by careful detailing and efficient construction.
During the following decades Petersen combined design practice with teaching, serving as an instructor at Denmark’s Design School from 1973 to 1978 and later as a lecturer at the Royal Danish Academy’s Furniture School between 1978 and 1985. His furniture was often executed in light woods such as ash and beech, emphasizing durability, ease of production, and long-term usability. Several of his designs were commissioned for public buildings, including theaters and concert halls across Denmark.
Bernt Petersen’s work represents a thoughtful continuation of the Danish cabinetmaking tradition, where craftsmanship, simplicity, and functional clarity were central principles.
