Information

This is the model “Kontiki” three-seater sofa designed by Arne Norell and produced by Arne Norell AB in Aneby, Sweden during the 1960s. As with its two-seater counterpart, this piece combines elements of modern Scandinavian design with influences from campaign and safari furniture, emphasizing structure, natural materials, and modular construction.

The sofa is composed of a stained beech wood frame that is visible and expressed as an integral part of the design. The cylindrical wooden structure is constructed with precision mortise joints, pins, and horizontal dowels that carry the seat platform and reinforce the overall stability. Leather straps run beneath the cushions and along the sides and back, attaching to the frame with polished brass buckles. This system not only provides flexible support but also adds a rugged and functional aesthetic that evokes expeditionary furniture.

The seat, back, and armrest cushions are upholstered in supple cognac-brown leather with visible grain and natural patination. The leather has aged with softness and tonal variation, showcasing natural creases and surface movement from use. The cushions are generously padded and retain their volume and form, contributing to a high level of comfort while maintaining the piece’s distinctive relaxed silhouette.

Arne Norell (1917–1971) was an influential Swedish designer known for his explorations in form and materiality. His works often incorporate visible joinery, saddle leather, and solid wood in ways that reference global design traditions. Norell founded his namesake company in the 1950s, and many of his most iconic designs, including the Kontiki, were produced under this label. The Kontiki model, while rooted in Scandinavian design principles, borrows from international styles such as British colonial campaign furniture and Bauhaus-era modular seating systems.

The condition is very good vintage, with minor signs of wear that remain consistent with age. The leather is intact and has developed a deep patina with soft luster. The brass fittings exhibit light oxidation and maintain their function and sheen. The beech wood structure is sound with minimal wear.
