Hans Wegner lounge chair
This exceptionally rare lounge chair, model GE-2, also known as the Hammock chair, was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Getama in Denmark. A striking example of Wegner’s mastery in combining sculptural form with ergonomic functionality, the GE-2 embodies the designer’s deep understanding of natural materials and their structural capabilities.
The chair features a solid oak frame with an elegantly curved silhouette, designed to follow the body’s natural reclining posture. The seat is crafted from tightly woven flagline, a material celebrated for its strength and flexibility, creating a suspended and weightless seating experience. The original sheepskin and leather headrest add a tactile contrast to the wood and cord, enhancing both comfort and visual richness. The warm oak tone and natural textures of the materials give the piece a timeless presence, while the distinctive hammock-like construction showcases Wegner’s experimental approach to seating design during the 1950s and 60s.
Hans J. Wegner, often referred to as the “Master of the Chair”, was one of the most influential figures of Danish modernism. His collaboration with Getama, a manufacturer known for high-quality craftsmanship and close partnerships with leading Danish designers, resulted in some of the most iconic furniture of the mid-20th century. The GE-2 is among the rarest and most collectible of these works, produced only in small numbers and sought after today for its sculptural quality and exceptional craftsmanship.
This example remains in excellent vintage condition, with only small signs of use and minor repairs to the flagline. Its combination of natural materials, minimalist construction, and functional elegance encapsulates the essence of Scandinavian modern design.
