Hans Wegner easy chair
This easy chair is the Ox Chair, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1960 and produced by A.P. Stolen in Denmark. It is one of Wegner’s most iconic lounge chair designs, characterized by its sculptural form, generous proportions, and the bold, sweeping headrest that resembles the horns of an ox. The chair combines organic curves with a commanding presence, reflecting Wegner’s mastery in balancing function with striking form.
The chair is upholstered in light cream Savak wool, complemented by contrasting leather piping that outlines its edges and accentuates the sculptural contours. The upholstery shows small signs of usage consistent with age, but remains in good vintage condition. The fabric’s natural texture and subtle tone create a warm contrast against the polished steel frame, which provides stability while lending a light, modernist touch. The seat and armrests are rounded and voluminous, designed to embrace the sitter, while the headrest projects outward, giving both visual drama and ergonomic support.
Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was one of the most influential Danish furniture designers of the 20th century and a central figure in the development of modern Scandinavian design. Known as the “Master of the Chair”, he designed more than 500 chairs, many of which have become international icons. His work was rooted in craftsmanship, functionality, and sculptural elegance, with a constant drive to perfect form through simplification. The Ox Chair was a radical departure from his earlier wooden chair designs, signaling his exploration of bolder forms and new materials during the 1960s.
The producer, A.P. Stolen, was a Danish manufacturer active during the mid-20th century, collaborating with leading designers such as Hans Wegner and producing some of his most experimental upholstered works. Their craftsmanship and attention to detail contributed significantly to the success of these designs, ensuring both comfort and durability while preserving Wegner’s artistic vision.
This chair represents a milestone in Scandinavian design, merging traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde form. Its style reflects both organic modernism and the sculptural experimentation of the 1960s, making it a rare and sought-after example of Wegner’s later work.
Dimensions are 100 cm in height, 95 cm in width, and 87.5 cm in depth (39.4 x 37.4 x 34.4 inches). The seat height is 35 cm (13.8 inches).
