Illum Wikkelsø easy chair
This very rare model V11 easy chair, designed by Illum Wikkelsø and produced by Holger Christiansen in Denmark during the 1960s, is a distinguished example of mid-century Scandinavian organic modernism.
The chair’s frame is crafted from solid rosewood, known for its dense quality and rich, dramatic grain. The tapered, outward-angled legs with their conical profile provide visual lightness while supporting the substantial upholstered form. The wood shows a mature surface patina with minor wear, evidencing its vintage authenticity.
The original black leather upholstery has aged gracefully, developing a soft patina with creasing and surface wear that add tactile depth. The plush cushions, including wide armrests and generous seat and back padding, create a relaxed and enveloping silhouette. The chair’s ergonomic form is evident in its angled backrest and seamless transitions between the back, seat, and arms.
This low, wide design balances stability and openness, with rear legs extending from a curved shell and tilting backward, while the armrests rise and flow into the backrest. The chair’s construction remains structurally sound, showcasing Holger Christiansen’s precise craftsmanship.
Illum Wikkelsø, a key figure in Danish design, melded sculptural clarity with comfort, influenced by Kaare Klint and Jacob Kjær. His work is increasingly celebrated for its human-centered design and organic aesthetics.
Dimensions: 87 cm wide, 92 cm deep, 85 cm high, seat height 39 cm (approximately 34.3” W × 36.2” D × 33.5” H, seat height 15.4”). The chair’s condition reflects thoughtful use and age, preserving its original character and integrity.
