Erik Ole Jørgensen easy chairs
This is a rare pair of easy chairs designed by Erik Ole Jørgensen and produced by Bovirke in Denmark during the 1950s. The design is a striking example of modernist Danish furniture, showcasing both structural simplicity and material sophistication.
The chairs are constructed with a tubular steel frame finished in polished chrome. The frame’s geometric clarity contrasts with the organic softness of the suspended seat shell. The seat itself is crafted from thick natural suede leather in a warm cognac tone, which has developed a rich patina over time. The leather is attached to the frame using a combination of lace ties and leather straps with metal buckles, allowing for flexibility and support while maintaining a visually light profile. This laced construction highlights the craftsmanship and functional detailing typical of mid-century Danish design.
The rounded seat form envelops the sitter, providing excellent comfort despite the chair’s minimalist structure. The suede leather is visibly worn in places, with areas of darkening and variation in tone, consistent with age and use, which adds to the piece’s character and authenticity. The steel frames remain in excellent condition with minor signs of wear.
This model is notable for its combination of industrial materials and natural leather, reflecting the Scandinavian interest in tactile contrasts and modern aesthetics during the postwar period. These chairs are well-preserved examples of Jørgensen’s work for Bovirke, which remains sought after among collectors and connoisseurs of Danish modern furniture.
Each chair measures 68.5 cm in width, 68 cm in depth, and 67 cm in height, with a seat height of 34 cm.
