Information

This exceptional rocking chair was designed and produced by Danish master cabinetmaker Frits Henningsen during the 1940s. It is a rare example of his work, combining traditional craftsmanship with an elegant, modern sensibility. The piece reflects Henningsen’s deep commitment to quality and a sculptural approach to form, characteristic of his furniture made in limited numbers by his own Copenhagen workshop.

The chair features a solid stained oak frame, which provides a stable yet gently contoured foundation for the rocker’s motion. The wood has a deep, warm tone and displays the fine grain and joinery expected from a cabinetmaker of Henningsen’s caliber. The rockers are long and slender with a smooth curvature that supports a comfortable and rhythmic movement, while the uprights and seat rails are robust but delicately shaped.

Upholstered in high-quality black leather, the chair’s padded seat, backrest, and armrests convey both luxury and durability. The leather has a subtle gloss and is button-tufted at the back, contributing visual depth and texture to the chair’s otherwise streamlined appearance. The high, slightly reclined back and gently flared armrests offer a relaxed and supportive posture. The rounded arm fronts feature a modest lip, rolling over in a sculptural gesture that enhances both comfort and visual softness.

This rocking chair sits at the intersection of 20th-century Danish traditionalism and early modern form. Frits Henningsen, unlike many of his contemporaries, never fully embraced industrial production. Instead, he continued to personally supervise the manufacture of his pieces, favoring artisanal integrity over mass production. His furniture, therefore, stands as a testament to handcraft, meticulous detail, and timeless proportion.

The chair remains in excellent vintage condition, with well-preserved leather showing only minor signs of age-appropriate wear, most notably on the front edges of the armrests and seat. The oak frame is structurally sound, with a well-maintained surface that retains its rich patina.
