Mogens Voltelen easy chair

This very rare lounge chair, model “Copenhagen II” or MV60, was designed by Mogens Voltelen and produced by master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder in Denmark in 1960. It represents a refined continuation of Voltelen’s earlier Copenhagen lounge chair from 1936, presented as part of the renowned Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibitions, where Denmark’s most important designers and cabinetmakers showcased their innovations.

The chair is constructed from black lacquered wood with a strikingly sculptural profile. The sharply angled frame gives the piece a sense of dynamic movement, while also supporting the suspended leather seat. The cognac-colored leather is mounted with straps that are integrated into the frame, both structurally and decoratively, and the leather armrests extend in long curves supported by leather tension straps. The combination of darkened wood and natural leather creates a strong contrast, emphasizing both the construction and the organic surface textures. The leather shows signs of usage and a deep, warm patina, which enhances its historic and aesthetic presence.

Voltelen’s design is both functional and expressive, uniting the principles of Danish modernism with an architectural sensibility. By 1960, when this chair was unveiled at Designmuseum Danmark, the tradition of the Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibitions had reached its peak, with designers such as Voltelen, Niels Vodder, Finn Juhl, and Hans Wegner setting international standards for craftsmanship and innovation. This piece stands as an important example of that period, showing Voltelen’s ongoing exploration of ergonomic form and visual lightness achieved through bold, structural gestures.

The chair remains in excellent condition with beautiful patina, combining originality with authenticity.
