Boréns floor lamp
This rare Swedish floor lamp was produced by Boréns during the 1950s and presents a characteristic mid-century combination of sculptural form and practical dual lighting. The construction is based on a slender vertical stem in black lacquered metal, anchored by a circular base plate that provides stability while maintaining a visually light footprint. Contrasting brass components are integrated throughout, giving the lamp a clear material hierarchy and accentuating its functional junctions.
The upper light source is fitted with a newly reupholstered shade in a pleated, translucent fabric. The shade has a slightly flared, asymmetrical profile and is mounted in a brass gallery, producing a diffused upward and ambient light. This top element acts as the primary room light, with the textile surface softening the output and creating an even distribution that emphasizes the ribbed structure of the shade when illuminated.
A secondary adjustable reading light is mounted to the stem via a curved brass arm. The spotlight is executed in black lacquered metal with a conical form, perforated with small ventilation holes near the rear of the shade. Its directional construction allows a controlled, concentrated beam, intended for task lighting. The combination of an indirect uplight and a focused reading lamp reflects the mid-century functional approach, where a single object could support multiple lighting needs without increasing visual complexity.
Boréns was a Swedish lighting manufacturer active during the mid-20th century, known for producing refined domestic lighting with an emphasis on balanced proportions, mixed materials, and technically resolved details. Lamps of this type are closely associated with Scandinavian modern interiors of the post-war period, where black lacquered metal and brass were frequently combined to create contrast between matte and reflective surfaces while retaining an overall restrained aesthetic.
The lamp is in good vintage condition, showing signs of use and age-related patina. The brass components display natural oxidation and surface wear, while the black lacquered parts show minor marks consistent with long-term handling. The shade has been newly reupholstered, providing a clean textile surface while preserving the original structural character of the design.
