Alvar Aalto easy chair

Information

A rare easy chair model 400, often referred to as the “Tank Chair” designed by Alvar Aalto in 1936 and produced by Artek in Finland. This example dates from the 1960s and represents one of Aalto’s most iconic and sculptural seating designs, combining comfort with a bold architectural presence.

The chair is constructed with a continuous bent birch frame, finished in a deep high-gloss black lacquer. The sweeping, cantilevered form of the frame defines the character of the piece, with its broad, looping armrests and solid runners creating a sense of both stability and visual lightness. The curvature of the wood demonstrates Aalto’s pioneering work with laminated birch, allowing for fluid, organic lines while maintaining structural strength.

The seat and backrest are generously proportioned and upholstered in a light cream wool fabric with a subtle ribbed texture. The upholstery provides a soft visual contrast to the dark, reflective frame, emphasizing the interplay between warmth and modernity. The thick cushioning enhances comfort, while the slightly reclined angle contributes to a relaxed seating position.

The chair measures 75.5 cm (29.7 inches) in height, 85 cm (33.5 inches) in depth, and 62 cm (24.4 inches) in width, with a seat height of 38 cm (15 inches). Its low, grounded stance and wide proportions give it a substantial yet inviting presence, characteristic of the model.

Condition is good vintage, with visible signs of use consistent with age. The lacquered birch frame shows minor wear and surface marks, while the wool upholstery has some stains and signs of use.

Model 400 is widely regarded as a landmark in 20th-century furniture design, exemplifying Alvar Aalto’s humanistic approach to modernism, where innovative construction techniques meet comfort, material sensitivity, and timeless form.
