Kai Kristiansen mirror
Wall mirror designed by Kai Kristiansen and produced by Aksel Kjersgaard in Odder, Denmark during the 1950s. The mirror reflects the refined cabinetmaking traditions associated with Danish modernism, where careful proportions, understated detailing, and exceptional woodworking were central elements of the design language. Executed in richly figured rosewood, the frame displays a restrained architectural expression with softened inner contours and precisely joined corners.
The rectangular frame is constructed from solid rosewood with deep reddish-brown coloration and pronounced dark grain variation characteristic of the timber. The inner edge of the frame is subtly bevelled and rounded toward the mirrored surface, creating a gradual visual transition that softens the otherwise strict geometric form. Visible circular joinery details at the corners emphasize the handcrafted construction while remaining integrated into the overall composition. The slim proportions and vertical orientation contribute to the mirror’s elegant and understated appearance.
Kai Kristiansen belongs to the generation of Danish designers who helped define Scandinavian furniture and interior design during the post-war decades. Educated at the Royal Danish Academy under Kaare Klint, Kristiansen became known for combining functional clarity with sculptural refinement and highly detailed craftsmanship. His designs frequently explored the expressive qualities of wood through carefully balanced proportions and subtle organic shaping. While primarily associated with furniture design, his mirrors and smaller interior objects demonstrate the same precision and material sensitivity found throughout his larger body of work.
The mirror was produced by Aksel Kjersgaard, one of the most respected Danish manufacturers of mirrors and smaller furniture pieces during the mid-20th century. Based in Odder, the company became internationally recognized for its high-quality woodworking and collaborations with prominent Danish designers including Kai Kristiansen, Henning Kjaernulf, and Jens Risom. Production from Aksel Kjersgaard is noted for its meticulous finishing, refined joinery, and consistent use of premium hardwoods such as teak and rosewood.
The mirror remains in good vintage condition with minor signs of age and usage. The rosewood frame shows light wear and natural patina consistent with age, while the mirrored glass remains clear and functional. Manufacturer’s stamp to the reverse.
