Svend Langkilde sideboards
Rare pair of sideboards designed by Svend Langkilde and produced by Langkilde Møbler in Denmark. Originally retailed through Illums Bolighus in Copenhagen, the cabinets represent the refined craftsmanship and understated elegance associated with Danish cabinetmaking during the mid-century period. Svend Langkilde is best known for his uncompromising attention to detail and carefully balanced proportions, with his furniture produced in comparatively limited numbers, making surviving examples increasingly uncommon.
The pair is executed in richly figured rosewood with beautifully matched veneers displaying dramatic grain patterns across the fronts, tops and sides. Each cabinet is elevated on a distinctive solid rosewood base with geometric triangular bracing, creating a visually light appearance while providing structural stability. The restrained form is complemented by finely recessed drawer pulls, exposed solid brass hinges and precise joinery throughout, demonstrating the exceptionally high level of craftsmanship characteristic of Langkilde Møbler.
One cabinet is fitted with four full-width drawers offering generous storage, while the second cabinet features a versatile interior arrangement behind two hinged doors. Inside are adjustable shelves together with four shallow document trays, making it equally suitable for dining storage, office use or as a sophisticated bar cabinet. The interiors are finished with contrasting green felt-lined shelves, providing both a practical and elegant detail that enhances the luxurious character of the pieces.
The original Illums Bolighus retailer label remains present, confirming their sale through Copenhagen’s renowned design store, long regarded as one of Denmark’s leading retailers of high-quality modern furniture. Furniture retailed by Illums Bolighus is often associated with the finest Danish manufacturers and represents an important part of the history of Scandinavian modern design.
Both sideboards remain in good vintage condition with small signs of age and use consistent with careful ownership. The rosewood has developed a warm, deep patina, while the brass hardware retains its original character with light wear appropriate for age.
