Ceiling lamp

Rare Swedish ceiling lamp from the 1950s, distinguished by its sculptural lantern-like construction and striking combination of brass, lacquered metal and opaline glass.

The lamp is built around a tall cylindrical opaline glass diffuser, enclosed within an open cage of slender red-lacquered metal rods. The rods descend from a circular upper frame before curving inward toward the base, giving the fixture a light, architectural quality while recalling the form of a traditional hanging lantern. The vivid red lacquer provides an unusual graphic contrast to the softly illuminated white glass.

Above the cage is a broad, shallow metal reflector with a gently curved profile. Its aged surface has developed a richly mottled patina, particularly visible on the underside. When illuminated, the reflector catches the light from the central diffuser and takes on a warm golden tone, creating a second layer of indirect illumination around the fixture.

Small brass details punctuate the construction, including the suspension ring, lower fittings and decorative scalloped element beneath the glass. The lamp hangs from its original-style chain and brass ceiling canopy, reinforcing its distinctly mid-century character.

When switched on, the opaline glass produces a soft, diffuse glow while the surrounding red framework becomes dramatically silhouetted against the light. Seen from below, the radial arrangement of the metal rods creates an especially graphic composition, transforming the functional cage into a decorative pattern.

Produced in Sweden during the 1950s, the lamp reflects the more playful and expressive side of Scandinavian modern lighting, combining straightforward materials and construction with strong color, decorative detailing and an unusual sculptural silhouette.

The lamp remains in good vintage condition with signs of age and use throughout. The metal surfaces show wear, oxidation and losses to the lacquer consistent with age, while the brass has developed an attractive natural patina.
