Rare dining table model Lovö designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), Sweden, in 1932. Executed in acid-stained pine, the table is an important example of Hjorth’s celebrated Sportstugemöbler series, a collection that combined traditional Swedish craftsmanship with a modern architectural approach. Measuring 180 x 74.5 x 72.5 cm (70.9 x 29.3 x 28.5 inches), the table displays the restrained proportions and robust construction that characterize the Lovö model.

The rectangular tabletop is crafted from solid pine with a warm honey-brown acid-stained finish that accentuates the pronounced grain, knots and natural variations of the timber. The top rests on two broad plank-form supports connected by a substantial stretcher, while shaped bracket feet project beyond the supports to provide stability and a distinctive sculptural profile. The visible joinery and solid construction emphasize the material qualities of the pine, allowing the wood itself to define the table’s visual character.

Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) was one of Sweden’s most influential architects and furniture designers of the early twentieth century. As chief designer for Nordiska Kompaniet between 1927 and 1938, he produced furniture ranging from refined Swedish Grace interiors to the highly original Sportstugemöbler collections introduced in the early 1930s. Designed for Swedish holiday homes and country retreats, these models departed from the luxurious hardwoods of contemporary cabinetmaking in favor of native softwoods, exposed construction and simplified architectural forms. Although originally conceived as functional furniture for rural settings, the series has become one of the most sought-after expressions of Scandinavian design from the interwar period.

The Lovö model exemplifies Hjorth’s ability to merge vernacular building traditions with modernist design principles. The use of acid-stained pine enhances the natural texture and depth of the grain while giving the wood a rich, aged appearance. The broad plank supports, horizontal stretcher and restrained detailing create a balanced composition that combines structural clarity with a distinctly rustic aesthetic. The design reflects the ideals of Swedish functionalism while maintaining a close relationship with traditional craftsmanship and local materials.

The table remains in good vintage condition with an attractive, even patina developed through decades of use. The surface displays light wear, scattered marks, minor scratches and age-related variations consistent with its history, while the acid-stained finish has mellowed to a warm tone that highlights the character of the pine. These signs of age contribute to the authenticity of the piece without affecting its structural integrity or functionality.
