Information
Rare coffee table designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen in 1957, produced by France & Son in Denmark. Executed in solid rosewood with a black Formica tray, the table represents the refined craftsmanship and functional approach characteristic of Danish Modern furniture during the mid-20th century.

The rectangular tabletop features softly rounded corners, subtly raised edges, and a gently sculpted profile. The rosewood displays a rich reddish-brown color with darker chocolate-brown and almost black grain patterns, creating considerable variation across the surface. The solid wood frame is constructed with slender, slightly tapered legs, smoothly integrated into the horizontal rails through rounded transitions. Crossbars connecting the legs at either end provide additional structural stability while maintaining the open, lightweight appearance. A tray with a black Formica surface is incorporated beneath the tabletop, providing an additional functional surface that can be pulled out when needed.

Peter Hvidt (1916–1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907–1993) were among the influential figures in Danish furniture design during the postwar period. Their Copenhagen-based partnership, established in 1944, became known for combining traditional cabinetmaking techniques with modern construction methods and an emphasis on functional simplicity. Their furniture frequently incorporated carefully considered joinery, organic transitions, and balanced proportions, reflecting the broader development of Scandinavian modernism.

France & Son, originally established as France & Daverkosen, was an important Danish furniture manufacturer during the 1950s and 1960s. The company collaborated with several prominent Danish designers and became particularly associated with the international distribution of Scandinavian modern furniture. Its production combined skilled woodworking with efficient manufacturing methods, contributing to the growing international recognition of Danish furniture design during this period. The table retains the manufacturer’s marking, including the France & Son emblem and Made in Denmark inscription.

The table is in good vintage condition and has been fully restored and refinished. The rosewood surfaces retain their distinctive natural grain and warm coloration, with minor traces of age consistent with the table’s history. The restoration has renewed the finish while preserving the original design, construction, and material characteristics.
