Information
An exceptionally rare pair of sculptural ceiling lamps attributed to Swedish architect John Åkerlund, designed for the Resurrection Chapel (Uppståndelsekapellet) in Själevad, Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. The chapel was consecrated in 1955, placing the lamps within the context of Swedish mid-century ecclesiastical design.

The lamps feature an architectural composition of three descending tiers of curved metal shades, arranged around a central vertical structure. Each tier consists of overlapping, outward-flaring panels that create a striking interplay of geometric precision, sculptural volume, and softly flowing contours. The brushed metal surfaces lend the design a restrained industrial character, while the layered construction introduces a sense of movement and rhythm.

Each lamp incorporates 13 light sources, positioned at different levels throughout the structure. When illuminated, the arrangement produces a dramatic effect, with warm light reflecting against the interior surfaces of the curved shades. The contrast between the softly glowing metal and the darker exterior emphasizes the lamps’ sculptural qualities, transforming them into luminous architectural objects.

The design is distinguished by its unusual vertical proportions and carefully considered distribution of light. The upper section features an inverted, flared metal crown surrounding a ring of exposed bulbs, while the three progressively smaller tiers below create a cascading silhouette. A small, tapered metal finial completes the composition at the bottom, echoing the geometry of the upper crown.

Originally commissioned for the Resurrection Chapel in Själevad, the lamps were conceived for a sacred architectural setting, where lighting played an important role in establishing an atmosphere of contemplation and solemnity. Their monumental proportions and distinctive arrangement of light sources suggest a close relationship between the fixtures and the architectural character of the chapel.

According to the available provenance, only six examples were produced, making these lamps exceptionally rare. Their documented origin from the Resurrection Chapel further distinguishes them as significant examples of Swedish architectural lighting from the 1950s.

The lamps are preserved in good vintage condition, with signs of use and a natural patina consistent with their age and history.
