Kay Kørbing ceiling lamp
The design is characterised by its striking cylindrical composition, consisting of a long, slender upper brass section that extends into a wider cylindrical shade below. The clean geometric proportions give the lamp a sculptural appearance, while the golden brass surface introduces warmth and a subtle sense of luxury.
A particularly distinctive feature is the precise arrangement of rectangular perforations around the upper section and narrow vertical openings along the lower edge of the shade. These carefully spaced cutouts introduce rhythm and texture to the otherwise smooth metal surfaces, while allowing light to escape through the brass structure.
The lower section incorporates a cylindrical glass diffuser that extends slightly beneath the brass shade. Its transparent surface contrasts with the solid metal construction, creating a delicate interplay between materials. When illuminated, the glass catches and distributes the warm light, producing a softly glowing circular edge beneath the shade.
The lamp’s construction allows light to emerge both downward through the glass opening and through the perforated brass elements. The resulting illumination emphasises the architectural character of the design, with subtle reflections appearing on the interior metal surfaces and a warm glow surrounding the lower portion.
Suspended from a long black cord with a matching conical ceiling canopy, the lamp has an elegant vertical presence. The dark suspension provides a restrained contrast to the golden brass, allowing the cylindrical body to remain the visual focal point.
The combination of precise metalwork, geometric simplicity, and carefully controlled illumination reflects the functional elegance associated with Danish lighting design of the 1950s. Its understated yet distinctive appearance makes it particularly suitable for interiors featuring Scandinavian modernist furniture and architectural detailing.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition, with signs of age and use consistent with its period. The brass displays natural patination, minor scratches, small areas of oxidation, and surface wear, particularly around the edges and perforated sections. These details contribute to its authentic vintage character.
A rare and sophisticated example of Danish mid-century lighting, combining architectural clarity, fine brass detailing, and atmospheric illumination.
