Carl Fagerlund ceiling lamp
A rare and substantial ceiling lamp designed by Carl Fagerlund and produced by Orrefors in Sweden during the 1950s. Crafted from richly textured clear glass and brass, the lamp combines an elegant circular form with intricate glass detailing, reflecting the refined craftsmanship and decorative character of Scandinavian lighting design from the mid-20th century.
The lamp features a broad, shallow cylindrical body composed of numerous vertically arranged glass elements forming a continuous circular shade. Each glass element has a finely textured surface with a distinctive geometric pattern that creates a shimmering, almost crystalline appearance. The individual sections are arranged closely together, giving the shade a cohesive architectural structure while allowing light to pass through the textured glass.
The underside is particularly elaborate, featuring a radial composition of textured glass sections extending outward from a central brass fitting. The repeated glass elements create a striking sunburst pattern, with alternating ridges and intricate surface details emphasizing the circular geometry of the design. Small brass fittings are positioned at regular intervals across the underside and around the perimeter, securing the glass components while introducing subtle metallic accents.
The lamp is suspended from a short brass stem connected to a cylindrical ceiling canopy. The warm golden tone of the brass provides an elegant contrast to the transparent glass, while the natural patina developed over time adds depth and character to the metal surfaces. Its compact suspension and generous diameter give the lamp a strong horizontal presence, making it particularly suitable for rooms with standard or lower ceiling heights.
When illuminated, the textured glass transforms the light into a warm and atmospheric glow. The intricate surfaces refract and diffuse the illumination, creating a lively interplay of reflections and subtle shadows across the glass. Light also spreads upward toward the ceiling, producing a soft halo around the brass canopy. The combination of transparent material, detailed surface texture, and warm illumination gives the lamp a distinctive sculptural quality.
Carl Fagerlund was one of the notable Swedish lighting designers associated with Orrefors during the mid-20th century. His work is characterized by an exploration of glass as both a functional and decorative material, often combining richly textured glass with brass fittings. This ceiling lamp demonstrates that approach through its carefully balanced proportions, elaborate glass construction, and restrained use of metal.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition, with small signs of age and use consistent with its production period. The brass displays natural patination and minor surface wear, while the glass shows minor damages, including small chips and imperfections. These do not significantly detract from the overall decorative appearance of the piece.
