Uno & Östen Kristiansson floor lamp
The sculptural oak frame consists of three tapered wooden legs joined by shaped wooden connections secured with visible metal screws. Two legs extend outward to form a stable tripod base, while the third continues upward into a long, slightly inclined stem. At the top, a conical wooden fitting supports the downward-facing lampshade, which is attached through a small metal joint. The shade has been newly reupholstered in a light grey canvas fabric with a natural woven texture. Its softly gathered construction creates a tapered, bell-shaped silhouette that contrasts with the straight lines of the wooden structure. When illuminated, the fabric diffuses the light, producing a warm, subdued glow while directing illumination downward.
Uno and Östen Kristiansson were Swedish designers known for their contributions to Scandinavian lighting and furniture design during the mid-20th century. Their work frequently incorporated solid wood, refined joinery, and organic forms, with particular attention to the relationship between structure and function. The brothers were associated with Luxus, the lighting manufacturer established in Vittsjö, southern Sweden, during the 1950s. The company became known for its production of modern lighting in wood, glass, and textiles, reflecting the period’s growing interest in combining traditional Scandinavian materials with contemporary industrial design.
The Giraffen model is representative of the experimental yet restrained character of Swedish lighting design in the 1950s. Its tall, inclined profile and widely spaced legs give the lamp an architectural appearance, while the exposed wooden construction emphasizes the material and structural principles behind its design. The combination of oak and fabric is characteristic of Scandinavian modernism, where natural surfaces, functional detailing, and geometric forms were used to create visually coherent objects.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and use consistent with its period. The oak displays a developed patina, including small surface marks and variations in tone, while the newly upholstered grey canvas shade presents a clean appearance. The visible wooden joints and metal fittings retain their characteristic detailing.
The overall height is 136 cm (53.5 in), and the lampshade measures 20.5 cm (8.1 in) in diameter.
