Kaare Klint addition sofas
This rare pair of Addition sofas and accompanying footstools, model no. 4698, was designed by Kaare Klint and produced by Rud. Rasmussen in Denmark. Originally conceived in 1933, this model exemplifies Klint’s foundational role in Danish modernism, emphasizing precise proportions, superior craftsmanship, and the use of high-quality materials.
The frames are crafted from Cuban mahogany, a dense hardwood known for its rich grain and durability, providing a sturdy yet elegant foundation. The seats and backs are upholstered in natural leather, which has developed a rich patina over time, lending the pieces a distinctive character. The upholstery features a hand-tufted diamond pattern accented with leather-covered buttons, introducing texture and depth to the design.
Kaare Klint, widely regarded as the father of Danish modernism, was celebrated for his rigorous attention to detail and commitment to ergonomic principles. His work drew from classical furniture traditions while reinterpreting them through a modern, functionalist lens. Rud. Rasmussen, one of Denmark’s premier cabinetmakers, was entrusted with realizing many of Klint’s designs, ensuring exceptional craftsmanship and fidelity to the original vision.
The set is in good vintage condition, showing natural wear and patina on the leather consistent with age and use. Each sofa measures approximately 95 cm in width, 70 cm in depth, and 79 cm in height (37.4 x 27.6 x 31.1 inches), with a seat height of 38 cm (15 inches). The footstools measure 95 cm wide, 63 cm deep, and 38 cm high (37.4 x 24.8 x 15 inches).
