Kaare Klint easy chairs
This rare pair of safari easy chairs was designed by Kaare Klint and produced by Rud Rasmussen in Denmark during the 1950s. The chairs feature frames crafted from solid ash wood, showcasing a warm, natural grain that highlights the material’s organic beauty. Brass fittings accentuate the construction, complementing the original cognac leather upholstery. The design embodies Klint’s signature blend of functional elegance, emphasizing lightweight structure and adaptable seating comfort.
Kaare Klint, often regarded as the father of Danish modernism, pioneered the integration of traditional craftsmanship with modernist design principles. His safari chair draws inspiration from British campaign furniture and African safari seating, designed for easy assembly and disassembly without compromising structural stability. The seat and backrest are made from suspended leather that naturally adapts to the sitter’s form over time. Adjustable leather straps add support while maintaining the chair’s distinctive floating aesthetic.
Rud Rasmussen, one of Denmark’s most esteemed cabinetmakers, collaborated closely with Klint to produce some of his most iconic designs. The company was renowned for its meticulous craftsmanship and high standards in material selection and construction.
The chairs are well-preserved with a rich patina that enhances their authenticity. The leather exhibits age-related wear, including natural creasing and tonal variations, adding to the character of the pieces. The ash wood frames display a deepened hue and subtle signs of careful use, consistent with vintage condition.
Each chair measures 57.5 cm in width, 63 cm in depth, and 79 cm in height (22.6 x 24.8 x 31.1 inches), with a seat height of 33 cm (13 inches), offering a balanced and comfortable design typical of Klint’s work.
