Michael Thonet stool
This stool is a rare example of mid-century bentwood craftsmanship, designed by Michael Thonet and produced by the renowned Austrian company Thonet in the 1950s. The construction demonstrates the long-standing tradition of steam-bent wood, a technique pioneered and perfected by Thonet in the 19th century and continued through the mid-20th century with evolving forms and refined proportions.
The stool features a spherical open frame made from dark-stained bentwood. The supporting structure is composed of intersecting circular rings that form a geometric and sculptural base, providing both stability and aesthetic rhythm. The curvature of the wood demonstrates technical precision and the flexibility of beechwood under steam-bending processes. The seat is made of woven natural cane, circular in form, and inset flush with the rim of the wooden frame. The contrast between the dark wood and the light-toned cane weave adds visual texture and warmth to the overall composition.
Michael Thonet (1796–1871) was a German-Austrian cabinetmaker and industrial designer best known for his innovative use of bentwood techniques. His early work led to the mass production of lightweight and durable furniture, most famously the No. 14 chair. The company he founded, Thonet, became a benchmark for modern furniture manufacturing, producing a wide range of seating and tables known for their clarity, functionality, and elegant simplicity. By the 1950s, Thonet’s aesthetic had evolved into more sculptural interpretations while still employing traditional techniques.
This particular piece remains in good vintage condition with minor signs of wear consistent with age and use. The cane seat appears to have been well-preserved, and the wooden elements retain their original finish with some light surface patina. The piece is a synthesis of structural ingenuity and organic design, aligning with both early modernist ideals and mid-century craftsmanship.
