Hans Bergström floor lamp
This rare floor lamp, designed by Hans Bergström and produced in the 1950s by ASEA in Sweden, exemplifies the elegant material contrast and refined detailing characteristic of Scandinavian mid-century lighting. The lamp combines functional design with aesthetic sophistication through the interplay of warm teak wood and aged brass, materials frequently employed by Bergström to achieve both visual and tactile richness.
The structure features a vertical shaft in solid teak, which remains in excellent condition, displaying a consistent tone and finely finished surface. The base and fittings are executed in brass, which has developed a natural patina over time. This surface oxidation enhances the lamp’s authenticity and period charm. Just below the lampshade, the brass is punctuated with a band of perforated detailing—a subtle but deliberate element that reflects the designer’s attention to craftsmanship and material articulation.
The lampshade is a contemporary replacement, selected to remain consistent with the lamp’s original proportions and function. It is paired with a modern E27 socket, ensuring compatibility with standard light bulbs while maintaining the lamp’s historical integrity. The lamp provides ambient lighting, suited for use as an accent or reading light within a living or study space.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was a key figure in Swedish lighting design and founder of Ateljé Lyktan. While much of his most renowned work was produced through his own company, he also collaborated with ASEA, a prominent Swedish lighting manufacturer. Bergström’s designs are celebrated for their graceful lines, subtle ornamentation, and functional clarity, all of which are evident in this piece.
The condition of the lamp is very good. The teak structure is pristine, and the brass components show moderate patina consistent with age and respectful use. The updated electrical components make it suitable for contemporary settings without compromising its vintage character.
The dimensions of the lamp are 20 cm in width, 40 cm in depth, and 137 cm in height. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 7.9 inches wide, 15.7 inches deep, and 53.9 inches high.
