Information

This rare sideboard was designed by Danish furniture designer Kai Kristiansen and produced by Preben Skov Andersen for PSA Furniture in Denmark during the 1960s. Constructed from rosewood with an interior in oak and accents in brushed aluminum, this piece embodies the refined minimalism and material contrasts that define Scandinavian mid-century modern design.

The cabinet’s linear form is accentuated by a dark rosewood veneer with consistent and expressive grain patterns, offering warm reddish-brown tones interspersed with darker striations. The facade is composed of four hinged doors on the left and center, and a bank of four drawers on the right. The drawers feature rectangular brushed aluminum pulls that introduce a modernist contrast to the wood’s organic texture, enhancing the precision and symmetry of the overall composition.

The cabinet is elevated on squared rosewood legs joined by a low stretcher bar and capped in aluminum feet, reinforcing the piece’s functional architecture while providing protection and visual balance. The interior features compartments and shelves in solid oak, creating a warm and tactile contrast with the rosewood exterior. The use of oak for the interior underscores the Danish tradition of combining multiple fine woods in a single piece to elevate both function and craftsmanship.

Kai Kristiansen, born in 1929, is renowned for his disciplined yet elegant approach to furniture design. Trained under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Kristiansen’s work is characterized by clean lines, functional sophistication, and precise detailing. His collaboration with Preben Skov Andersen reflects the peak of Danish furniture manufacturing in the postwar decades, where a focus on joinery, material integrity, and modular design solutions prevailed.

This sideboard is in good vintage condition and has been completely restored. All surfaces have been carefully refinished to highlight the natural qualities of the wood while preserving the original design intent. The structure remains solid and fully functional.
