Information

Designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by OPE Möbler in Sweden in 1958, this pair of rare wide easy chairs represents a compelling example of Scandinavian mid-century modern design. Kofod-Larsen’s work is often recognized for its refined proportions, organic lines, and attention to both comfort and material detail, qualities that are all present in this model.

The frames are constructed from solid teak, notable for its durability and visually rich grain. The wood exhibits a warm, golden-brown patina developed over time, enhanced by a finely polished surface. Structurally, the chairs feature wide seat proportions and a gently reclined backrest, designed to offer relaxed support while maintaining a sculpturally coherent profile. The inclusion of brass detailing provides a refined contrast to the teak, subtly accentuating the chair’s modernist geometry.

Upholstered in original black leather, the seat and backrest contribute both tactile richness and visual depth. The leather is in well-preserved condition, with light surface wear in areas of frequent contact, but no tears or significant blemishes. Its matte texture and natural aging enhance the chairs’ character without detracting from their integrity.

Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was a prominent figure in the post-war Scandinavian design movement. His furniture was characterized by ergonomic sensitivity and material innovation, and he worked extensively across Scandinavia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. His collaboration with OPE Möbler—one of Sweden’s respected mid-century manufacturers—produced several significant models that balanced mass appeal with craftsmanship.

Each chair measures 93 cm wide, 75 cm deep, and 72.5 cm high, with a seat height of 39 cm. In imperial units, these measurements correspond to approximately 36.6 inches wide, 29.5 inches deep, 28.5 inches high, and a seat height of 15.4 inches.
