Kai Kristiansen sofa
This rare two-seat sofa was designed by Danish furniture designer Kai Kristiansen in 1964 and produced by Christian Jensen Møbelsnedkeri in Denmark. It is constructed in solid oak with a cane backrest, and the seat has been recently reupholstered in a grey wool fabric. The sofa is an example of Kristiansen’s ability to combine refined craftsmanship with functional, modernist design, resulting in a piece that is both visually light and structurally robust. The frame’s clean lines are complemented by the organic texture of the woven cane, which adds depth and warmth to the design.
Kai Kristiansen, active primarily during the mid-20th century, is known for his precise, elegant furniture that bridges the gap between traditional cabinetmaking and modernist ideals. His works often display a meticulous attention to joinery, proportions, and materials, reflecting the high standards of Danish furniture production during this period. Christian Jensen Møbelsnedkeri was among the skilled workshops in Denmark producing furniture to the specifications of leading designers, contributing to the global reputation of Danish modernism.
The sofa retains its original oak frame and cane backrest, both showing signs of use and patina consistent with its age, yet remaining in good vintage condition. The new grey wool upholstery provides a subtle, neutral contrast to the warm oak and natural cane. Its low profile, gently angled back, and open structure are characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian design, which emphasized comfort, craftsmanship, and timeless simplicity.
