Hans Olsen easy chairs
This very rare pair of easy chairs, model 500, was designed by Hans Olsen and produced by CS Møbler in Denmark during the 1960s. They exemplify Scandinavian mid-century modern design through a refined material palette and architectural clarity characteristic of Olsen’s work.
The frames are constructed from solid rosewood, exhibiting a deep reddish-brown hue with prominent dark veining. The design balances vertical and horizontal lines with rounded profiles, resting on square legs. The sides and back panels are inset with woven cane, creating a light and breathable structure that contrasts texturally with the surrounding wood. The seat and back cushions are upholstered in the original silk fabric, which has aged to a warm olive-brown tone. The fabric shows minor wear and natural fading consistent with age but remains intact and soft. The thick, loose cushions rest within the solid frame, offering a relaxed and inviting seating experience. The combination of cane, rosewood, and silk lends tactile richness and visual contrast.
Hans Olsen studied under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy and developed a distinctive style that merged ergonomic sensitivity with bold form. Model 500 is among his rarer designs, demonstrating his interest in material combinations and frame transparency. The use of cane alongside rosewood and brass was progressive in Danish lounge furniture of the period, producing seating that is both lightweight and structurally expressive.
Each chair measures 73 cm in width, 78 cm in depth, and 73 cm in height, with a seat height of 40 cm (approximately 28.7 x 30.7 x 28.7 inches, seat height 15.7 inches).
