Ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp was produced in the 1950s by Orrefors in Sweden and, though the designer remains unknown, it stands as a rare example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. The lamp exemplifies the fusion of refined glass artistry and functionalist aesthetics that were characteristic of the era.
The lamp is constructed from etched glass and brass. The glass shade is designed in a balloon-shaped form, with a gently pointed lower termination. It is decorated with a repeating etched diamond lattice pattern that overlays the frosted white surface. The interplay between the transparent and etched areas creates a layered effect, subtly modulating the light emitted from within. This results in a sculptural quality, and when illuminated, the etched pattern projects soft geometric shadows along with a diffused glow. The lighting effect contributes both to the atmosphere of the space and to the decorative visual impact of the fixture.
The lamp is suspended from a domed brass ceiling canopy by three fine cords, along with a central brass-finished electrical cable. The brass detailing, including the suspension hardware and the spherical finials that secure the cords to the glass, has developed a warm patina, which complements the soft translucence of the etched glass shade.
Orrefors, established in 1898, is internationally recognized for its tradition of fine art glass production. During the mid-20th century, the company worked with many of Sweden’s leading designers. Although the designer of this particular model is unidentified, the lamp reflects the high-quality craftsmanship and formal elegance that Orrefors was known for during this period.
The design is typical of Scandinavian modernism, combining gentle, organic forms with precision manufacturing and material integrity. The use of etched glass was particularly favored in 1950s Swedish lighting, as it softens and distributes light effectively while emphasizing the artisanal detail of the piece.
The dimensions of the lamp are 30 cm in diameter and 64 cm in height (approximately 11.8 inches in diameter and 25.2 inches high).
The lamp is in excellent condition, with the etched glass intact and free from chips, and the brass components displaying a consistent vintage patina. This lamp is a fine example of mid-century Scandinavian design, blending functional lighting with artistic craftsmanship.
