Information

This rare freestanding sideboard was designed by Arne Vodder and produced by Sibast Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. Constructed entirely from teak, the sideboard features a pair of sliding tambour doors, offering a space-efficient solution ideal for tighter interiors. The tambour doors glide smoothly, revealing a well-organized interior with open shelving and a set of curved, shallow drawers. This layout reflects Vodder’s keen attention to detail and his focus on ergonomic functionality, making the piece both practical and visually appealing.

The front of the sideboard is adorned with a fine teak veneer, displaying a warm golden-brown tone with a vertically grained pattern that emphasizes the natural variation in the wood. The recessed handles are organically shaped, a characteristic of Vodder’s design language, which favored soft, sculptural minimalism. The sideboard is supported by slightly tapered round legs, connected by horizontal stretchers, giving the piece a light and airy visual presence, despite its width.

Arne Vodder (1926–2009) was a prominent Danish architect and furniture designer, known for his refined designs that embody the elegance and simplicity of the Danish modern movement. Trained under Finn Juhl, Vodder was highly regarded for his use of fine woods like teak and rosewood. His designs often combined subtle expressiveness with functionalism, and his work was widely exported, particularly to the American and German markets, during the mid-century era.

Sibast Møbelfabrik, a family-run Danish furniture company, was renowned for its high-quality craftsmanship and innovative designs. The company worked with leading designers such as Vodder, Piet Hein, and Helge Sibast, and became known internationally for its meticulous joinery and careful selection of materials. Sibast’s collaborations with Vodder, in particular, produced a range of iconic pieces that remain highly regarded in the world of Scandinavian furniture design.

The dimensions of the sideboard are 190 cm in width, 47 cm in depth, and 72 cm in height. In imperial measurements, this corresponds to approximately 74.8 inches wide, 18.5 inches deep, and 28.3 inches high. The piece is in excellent condition, with minimal signs of wear and a well-preserved finish that maintains the integrity of the original materials, ensuring it remains a timeless example of mid-century Danish design.
