Börje Johanson bar stools

This set of bar stools was designed by Börje Johanson and produced by Johanson Design in Markaryd, Sweden during the 1960s. These stools embody the Scandinavian mid-century modern ethos for public and commercial seating, skillfully balancing sculptural form, industrial fabrication, and ergonomic comfort.

The structure features a central pedestal base made from brass-plated steel with a trumpet-shaped foot, supporting a slender column that holds a circular seat and a curved backrest. The brass surfaces have developed a soft golden patina with light oxidation typical of aged brass finishes, imparting character and authenticity.

The seat and backrest are padded and upholstered in original dark red imitation leather, with a deep oxblood hue and glossy finish. This color complements the brass tones and evokes the slightly opulent ambiance typical of 1960s and early 1970s lounge and bar interiors. The upholstery remains in good vintage condition, showing minor creasing and wear consistent with age. The backrest attaches to the base via a distinctive U-shaped tubular support, which adds visual rhythm and structural lightness.

Each stool includes an integrated footrest formed by a circular brass ring with geometric support struts, echoing the seat’s curves and enhancing stability. Manufacturer’s labels stamped beneath the seats confirm the origin and designer attribution.

Börje Johanson was a noted Swedish designer known for creating seating solutions tailored to public interiors and high-traffic spaces. His partnership with Johanson Design contributed to Sweden’s reputation for high-quality modernist commercial furniture during the postwar period. Johanson Design continues to operate today, upholding its legacy of clean-lined, functional design.

Each stool measures 54 cm wide, 53 cm deep, and 108 cm high, with a seat height of 85 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds approximately to 21.3 inches wide, 20.9 inches deep, 42.5 inches in overall height, and 33.5 inches in seat height.
