Paavo Tynell flush mount
The rare ceiling lamp, model 9067, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito in Finland. This flush mount fixture is a refined example of Tynell’s mid-century lighting philosophy, which merged functional clarity with an ornamental sensibility rooted in craftsmanship. The lamp features a cylindrical metal shade with a subtle taper toward the base, finished in lacquered metal and accented with elegant brass components. These materials are thoughtfully combined to produce a visual and tactile contrast typical of Tynell’s work.
One of the most distinctive elements of model 9067 is the perforated pattern that encircles the lower edge of the shade. These precisely cut apertures filter the light, creating a decorative halo of illumination and casting intricate patterns onto the surrounding surfaces. This use of perforation to manipulate light and shadow is a hallmark of Tynell’s design language, often likened to the effect of a softly glowing star field. The brass detailing, which includes a central finial or trim elements, has developed a natural patina, adding depth and historic character to the piece.
Tynell, often referred to as the “The man who illuminated Finland” was instrumental in defining Finnish modern lighting through his collaborations with architects and institutions during the mid-20th century. His work with Taito, where he served as artistic director and chief designer, produced many of Finland’s most iconic lighting fixtures. Taito’s production standards ensured exceptional build quality, with careful attention to joinery, finishes, and mechanical reliability.
This example of model 9067 is in excellent vintage condition. The lacquered shade retains its form and finish with only minor wear consistent with age, and the brass elements show a uniform, soft patina without corrosion. Its compact proportions and flush mount format make it adaptable to a range of interior applications, from corridors and entryways to smaller rooms where ambient light and decorative effect are equally valued. The lamp stands as a representative work of Tynell’s poetic and enduring approach to lighting design.
