Information

This is a rare set of six dining chairs and two armchairs designed by Kurt Østervig and produced by Sibast Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. The set is a refined example of Scandinavian modern design, showcasing Østervig’s attention to proportion, material quality, and structural balance. The chairs are crafted from solid rosewood, a material known for its deep grain patterns and rich, warm tones. The design features clean lines with slightly tapered legs, a sturdy frame, and subtly rounded edges. The armrests on the armchairs are shaped for comfort, following the natural curve of the wood. The backrests and seats are upholstered in black leather, creating a striking contrast with the rosewood frame. The leather is tightly stretched across the frame, maintaining a sleek and minimal aesthetic. The floating seat design, combined with the horizontal band of leather forming the backrest, contributes to the chair’s light and refined appearance.

Kurt Østervig was a Danish furniture designer whose work spanned from the mid-20th century into the late modern period. His designs were characterized by a strong understanding of functionality and craftsmanship, often incorporating organic elements into otherwise minimalist forms. Østervig collaborated with many of Denmark’s finest furniture manufacturers, including Sibast, a company known for its high-quality wood craftsmanship.

Sibast Møbelfabrik was a leading Danish furniture producer during the mid-century period, recognized for its collaboration with notable designers and its expertise in working with premium materials such as rosewood and teak. The company played a crucial role in defining Scandinavian modern furniture, ensuring durability and precision in every piece. The set is in good vintage condition, with well-preserved rosewood frames and minor signs of wear to the leather upholstery.
